&SISTERS guest blog: Let’s talk about organic period care

We all know that plastics are a huge issue for the environment – but did you know that the chemicals in plastic could also be harming your body – and your fertility?

From plastic bottles to plastic tampon applicators, we are putting plastic in and on our bodies every single day. What we put inside us matters and yet, shockingly, 80% of women don’t know what their period products are made of. Recent research highlights that the majority of women believe conventional products they use are made entirely from cotton but this is sadly not true.

Mainstream tampons and pads can actually contain up to 90% plastic. In fact, a leading brand pack of 14 sanitary pads contains the equivalent of 5 plastic bags!

Leading the way in transparency and honesty when talking about period care are &SISTERS. Launched by a mother and daughter, Claire and Lucy Lettice, the brand is on a mission to reimagine menstrual health for the better. The dynamic duo came up with the business idea when they realised that despite their age gap, little had changed when it came to navigating menstrual health. Period taboos are still prevalent worldwide, access to safe and sustainable period care is still a luxury reserved to those who can afford it and support for women with menstrual health problems is still seriously lacking. Frustrated yet determined, they set out on a mission to do something about it. Starting with period care.

Through a fertility journey, our period becomes a key focus for us – from tracking our cycle, to being notably absent if we fall pregnant. During this time we also become more focused on our health and what we’re putting in our bodies – so we asked &SISTERS for their top 5 tips on the questions we should ask  when buying period care products:

Is it BPA FREE?

BPAs or Bisphenol A is a chemical that has been used in plastic since the sixties. BPAs in period care can mimic oestrogen structure, affecting the hormonal balance within our bodies! With BPAs being more frequently detected in infertile women.

Is it Organic Certified?

Although the mainstream period care can look like cotton it’s not, it’s primarily made from wood fibers, plastic fibers, plus other artificial substances.

&SISTERS pads, tampons & liners are 100% organic cotton & soil association certified, the gold standard for organic cotton meaning we are free from all unnatural chemicals and pesticides our products contain absolutely no nasties!

Is it Chlorine Bleach free?

Its common practices in conventional period care to use pesticides, chlorine bleach & other harmful chemicals. Although in small amounts, through tampons primarily these chemicals can enter the bloodstream from shedding. &SISTERS no nasties organic period also uses a protective handwoven outer veil our to help prevent shedding!

Is it fragrance-free?

Period care doesn’t need to be fragranced. Our vaginas are self-cleaning! Adding fragrance to one of the most sensitive parts of the body is undesirable. The addition of fragrances can upset the pH balance, cause dryness & itching, or irritation. We don’t need any perfumes down there!

Are you using the right absorbency?

The average menstrual flow can range from 5mL to 80 mL (a strong drink), so it’s key to make sure you’re using the right absorbance to cater to your flow. Often, we don’t use the right absorbency for our flow, opting for a heavier absorbance than we actually need. Using the correct absorbency can help prevent the likelihood of Toxic Shock Syndrome (TSS). Why not try a nudie cup they can be worn for up to 12 hours. So, get to know your flow!

&SISTERS offers the most extensive range of vegan, zero-plastic, hypoallergenic products in the UK. Opt for a greener alternative to pads, tampons and liners within their 100% organic cotton range or make the switch to their zero-waste alternative- the nüdie period cup. With absorbances and sizes to cater for every sister’s flow, you’ll be sure to find the right product for your cycle- because periods are personal right?
