How do you support people with their reproductive health and wellbeing?
I have supported both NHS and private clients going through fertility treatment. Everyone that comes through is unique and has been on their own journey. I think it is important to consider all of the things that they may have or be going through, thinking about the individuals emotional, physical and social aspects which could be affecting them. As a fertility nurse, I always try to provide compassionate, informed evidence-based practice.
How long have you been working in your field?
I have been working as a nurse for just over 12 years and continue to specialise in women’s health.I have always wanted to do something that was going to help other people because I find that so rewarding, and I’ve consistently been interested in women’s health. My work is so rewarding because you’re witnessing life. It can be sad and hard at times but what I think is really nice, about working in fertility, is that there’s always hope.
Why do you do what you do?
It’s amazing when people get a positive result, but it is heartbreaking when they don’t or when they miscarry. It can also put a huge strain on relationships. I’ve always been interested in women’s health and mental health but I’m also interested in the male side, the impact fertility can have on men – from conception to parenthood.
What’s been a career highlight?
I recently completed a degree in specialist community public health nursing which I am immensely proud about. I was studying and working full time with a one-year-old. I learnt a great deal about another aspect of healthcare but also a lot about myself.
What do you wish people knew about your area of expertise?
Fertility is a specialised and dynamic area of medicine there are frequently changes as innovations and new techniques are adopted.
What is one reproductive health myth that you’d like to bust?
Out of every 100 couples trying for a baby, 80 to 90 will get pregnant within 1 year. The rest will take longer, or may need help to conceive.
Aside from the Parla app, where can we find you?
I work in the NHS as a health visitor and I am also a mom to a three-year-old.
